It’s easy to get stuck in the muddy waters of outside opinion. . “What will they say if I do this?” . “What if I fail?” . “What will they think of me? Will they think I think too much of myself? That I’m selfish if I dare allow myself to turn my volume all the way the f*ck up?” . Not only is it incredibly overwhelming and disorienting to swim in the depths of these waters. But it also hinders our creative process. Suddenly this filter is covering our expression. So what we end up producing is not in full resonance with who we are. It’s at 50% potency. Slightly dull in color and about half as effective. And we wonder why things don’t take off. Why we’re always stuck in the same place. Why what we create kind of bursts forward and fizzles out. When we create something from the place of our full selves. We create magic. But you see, the thing with magic is, some people LOVE it, and some people simply don’t believe in it. This is a part of what comes with creating from the heart. Of allowing yourself to expand every one of your edges and birth your truth into the world. Not everyone is going to like it. Because when we allow ourselves to be potent, to really be who we are, it means when our work hits home for someone… it REALLY hits home. And when it doesn’t? It REALLY doesn’t. And that’s ok. It has to be ok. Because you are here to contribute a very specific and unique gift to this world. You wouldn’t be here otherwise. So up the anti. Concentrate your potency to its highest level. Turn the volume up on your voice to level to. Simply be you. Just be you. It’s why you are here and there are people who cannot wait to receive you in all of your glory. And the ones that don’t? That aren’t meant to connect to your resonance? We resist the murky waters so insistently. We are told repeatedly that the goal is to be happy and to get to that goal we must think positively. So we demonize our pain and glorify our “good” feelings. We push darkness away like it’s an unwelcome and unworthy guest. The world we live in is inherently dualistic. There is no dark without light. And to really soak up every last ounce of life we must embrace it fully. We must open our arms to the full experience of it. The pain and the joy. The happiness and the sadness. The days where we’re on top of the world. And the ones where we feel as if we’ve reached its very bottom. Some of the most beautiful gifts can be found in the inkiest of nights. Some of the highest highs can only be appreciated because we have fallen to the lowest of lows. Spiritual teachers tell us to follow the path of least resistance. To follow what feels good. And this is true. But sometimes the path of least resistance, sometimes what feels best, is giving up the fight. Sometimes the release is found in the surrender. When we allow ourselves to love ourselves as we fall. To trust ourselves to find our way through the darkness And to make our pain our ally and our greatest teacher. We can then sink deep enough to find the gifts. She walked up to the heavy wooden door and pressed her hand up against it. She could hear the voices of her past rumbling behind it. And with the slightest tap of pressure, it swung open and she stepped inside. She soon found herself standing in a room full of old stories. Full of the people who had once sung her the song of tall tales. Tales of suppression and smallness. Of hushed tones and politeness. Ones where she was unfixably flawed. Where smallness was glorified and silence was preferred. And although the heaviness of tales once told hung in the air, she was not afraid. She was no longer the impressionable child she once was. No longer did she have to tune her ears to the sharp sound of fearful lies. No longer did her survival rest in the hands of others. She was stronger now. Very much so. She had met darkness eye-to-eye and made it her ally. She no longer judged or disregarded her innate luminosity as too much. Too bright. She was both as sturdy as steel and as soft as a downy feather. And with her head held high, she sat tall at the table in the complete fullness of who she was. Impenetrable to any stories not rooted in love. Saturated in her sovereignty. You see, it was not the world around her that had changed. She knew she could neither expect nor wait for such things. It was SHE that had changed the way she was within it. It was she that turned the story from a tragedy to a fantasy. Today I’m having a running into walls, tripping over life, flipping both middle fingers to the world kind of day. On days like this we have two options. 1. Contract to the point of combustion and forced surrender. 2. Immediate surrender and self-direction compassion and kindness. There are some days you will move mountains. And other days you will trip on the tiniest of pebbles. Neither is right. Neither is wrong. Both are just life. Both are just a part of being human. All you can ever do is the best you have with what you’ve got. And if that means flipping the middle finger off to thin air?
